How to Make an Oscar Ballot for Your 2027 Party

A great Oscar party needs one thing: a ballot. Here is how to make one, score it three ways, and run the games. Or skip the work with our free printable Oscar ballot.

What goes on an Oscar ballot

A party ballot does not need all 23 categories — six is the sweet spot. Include Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress. These are the categories everyone has opinions about, and they are announced late in the show when attention peaks. Hardcore cinephile groups can add screenplay, cinematography, and animated feature.

Under each category, list the nominees with a checkbox or circle. Leave room for a name at the top — anonymous ballots cause recount chaos.

Three ways to score

1. Classic (1 point each). One point per correct pick, most points wins. Simple, transparent, done. Best for casual parties.

2. Weighted. Best Picture = 3 points, directing and acting = 2, the rest = 1. Rewards nailing the big one. Announce the weights before the show — changing them mid-ceremony is how friendships end.

3. Confidence pool. Each guest ranks their six picks by confidence (6 = most confident). Correct picks earn their confidence value. A perfect ballot scores 21. This is the most strategic and the most fun for film nerds.

Party games beyond the ballot

  1. Acceptance speech bingo. Squares: "thanks the Academy," crying, political statement, runs long, thanks spouse first. First bingo wins a prize.
  2. Red carpet predictions. Before the show, everyone predicts best/worst dressed. Vote at halftime.
  3. Dead pool. Each guest predicts one upset — a longshot winner. Correct upset calls earn bonus points.
  4. Speech timer over/under. Guess whether the Best Picture speech runs over 90 seconds.

Timing your party

The ceremony runs about 3.5 hours. Have ballots filled before the red carpet ends — late picks made after seeing early winners are cheating, and everyone knows it. Collect ballots, photograph them (disputes happen), and score live as winners are announced. Our online ballot saves picks in the browser, so guests can finalize on their phones and you print the master set.

Make it a full evening, not just a ballot

The ballot is the backbone, but the best Oscar parties layer in atmosphere. Print a one-page "cheat sheet" with each nominee's film and one-line pitch — half your guests have not seen the arthouse picks, and a 30-second explainer ("it's the Brazilian political thriller everyone is talking about") makes every category exciting. Dim the lights for the final hour, keep a running leaderboard on a whiteboard or shared screen, and pause scoring debates until commercial breaks.

Food matters more than you think: theme snacks to the frontrunners (Brazilian cheese bread for The Secret Agent, red velvet anything for Sinners). It costs almost nothing and guests remember it for years. And designate one person as the official scorekeeper before the show — nothing deflates a party like a 20-minute recount argument at midnight.

Common ballot mistakes to avoid

  1. Too many categories. Twenty-three categories sounds thorough; in practice, guests stop caring after ten. Six to eight is the sweet spot.
  2. No tiebreaker. Decide now: ties split the prize, or a pre-chosen tiebreaker question ("how long is the Best Picture speech?") settles it.
  3. Collecting ballots late. Anyone who fills theirs in after the first winner is announced has an unfair edge. Collect before the ceremony starts.
  4. Forgetting the prize. Even a silly trophy (a gold-painted action figure is traditional) makes people care. Announce it upfront.

A note on 2027 nominees

The Academy announces official nominations in January 2027 for the March ceremony honoring 2026 films. Any ballot made before that uses predictions. Our ballot tool currently shows early frontrunners and will switch to official nominees once announced — your saved picks carry over, so you can adjust rather than start fresh.
