Frequently Asked Questions

How is BMI calculated?

BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by the square of your height in meters. In imperial units, it is (weight in pounds / height in inches squared) × 703. Both formulas give the same result.

What is a healthy BMI range?

A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered the healthy (normal) range for most adults. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is obese.

Is BMI accurate for athletes or muscular people?

Not always. BMI cannot distinguish muscle from fat, so very muscular people may show a high BMI without excess body fat. It is a screening tool, not a diagnosis — talk to a doctor for a full assessment.

How is the healthy weight range computed?

The healthy range is the weight span that keeps your BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 for your height. For example, at 170 cm tall, a healthy weight is roughly 53.5 to 72.3 kg.

Is this BMI calculator free?

Yes — completely free, with no account required. Everything is calculated in your browser and none of your data is sent anywhere.
