Free Storage Calculator — What Fits on Your Phone, Card or Drive?

Shopping for a phone or memory card always raises the same question: how many photos can 128 GB hold — or 64 GB, or 256 GB? The answer depends on what you shoot. A phone JPEG is only a few megabytes, a DSLR JPEG is around 10 MB, and a single RAW file can be 30 MB or more. This calculator works it out for every content type at once, so you can compare devices before you buy.

Why the box number is not the real number

Manufacturers count 1 GB as 1,000 MB, while your phone and computer count 1 GB as 1,024 MB. That is why a "128 GB" card shows up as about 119 GB on your device — roughly 6.9% vanishes to formatting and unit conversion before you store a single photo. This calculator applies that correction by default, so the counts you see are realistic, not theoretical maximums.

Typical capacities at a glance

Labelled sizeUsable space (approx.)Phone photos (~4 MB)1080p video
32 GB~29.8 GB~7,400~3.8 hours
64 GB~59.6 GB~14,900~7.6 hours

256 GB~238.4 GB~59,600~30.6 hours
512 GB~476.8 GB~119,200~61.1 hours
1 TB~931 GB~232,800~119 hours

Figures use 1 GB = 1,000 MB, usable space at 93.1% of labelled size, 1080p video at about 130 MB per minute. Your camera's real file sizes vary with scene detail and settings.

📱 Before you buy a phone

Compare 128 GB vs 256 GB in photos and video hours, not just gigabytes, and pick the size your shooting habit actually needs.

💾 Before you buy a memory card

Check whether a 64 GB card covers a holiday of RAW shooting — or whether you need 128 GB and a spare.

🎬 For video creators

4K video eats storage roughly three times faster than 1080p. See both numbers side by side before a shoot day.
