What is a typing speed test?
A typing speed test measures how quickly and accurately you can type on a keyboard. Your speed is shown as WPM (words per minute) and your precision as an accuracy percentage. The average typing speed for most people is around 40 WPM — professional typists reach 65–75 WPM, and the fastest typists in the world exceed 200 WPM.
How is WPM calculated?
One "word" is standardised as 5 characters including spaces. Your net WPM is calculated as:
WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes typed
Only correctly typed characters count toward your net WPM, which is why accuracy matters as much as raw speed. Your raw WPM counts every keystroke, while accuracy is simply correct keystrokes ÷ total keystrokes × 100.
Tips to type faster
- Use all ten fingers and keep them on the home row (ASDF JKL). Touch typing is the single biggest speed multiplier.
- Don't look at the keyboard. It feels slower at first, but builds muscle memory fast.
- Accuracy before speed. Slow down until you can type at 95%+ accuracy, then speed follows naturally.
- Keep a steady rhythm instead of bursting and pausing — consistent pacing beats fast-then-correct.
- Practice in short sessions of 5–10 minutes daily rather than one long weekly session.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good WPM score?
Around 40 WPM is average. 60+ WPM is above average and perfectly fine for most office work, while 80–100 WPM is considered fast and typical of professional transcriptionists.
Is this typing test free?
Yes — completely free, unlimited attempts, no account or signup required. Your best score is saved in your own browser only.
Why did my test pause?
If you click outside the test area, the timer pauses automatically so you don't lose time. Click the text area to resume.
Does backspace affect my score?
You can use backspace to fix mistakes. Your accuracy counts every keystroke, so correcting errors still costs a little — just like real typing.
Which mode should I choose?
Short 15–30 second tests are great for quick checks and warm-ups. The 60-second test gives the most reliable measure of your true sustained speed.
